Charles M Mudiwa

CEO at Stanbic Bank – Kenya

Mr. Mudiwa is a business leader with expertise in the financial sector. His vast experience of over 20 years includes setting up a bank from scratch as well as leading stock exchange listed financial institutions. He is currently the CEO at Stanbic Bank – Kenya.


His key achievements include successfully setting up Agricultural Bank of Zimbabwe(Agribank); launching of the first interbank financial inclusion product in South Africa (SA); growing Standard Bank Malawi from bank number 3 to number 1 on PAT and being recognised as the Banker magazine bank of the year for 6 years in a row 2007-2013; Best Employer 2011 and Best Equal Opportunity employer.


Charles is passionate about making change in every environment he works in. At Standard Bank South Africa he was part of an Interbank team that set up Mzansi Bank Account, a solution aimed at providing banking services to the unbanked. He was responsible for the roll out of banking services in the previously disadvantaged areas of SA, formulating and implementing the mass markets value proposition. In recognition of this work he has addressed various conferences including the Commonwealth Business Council and Micro Finance Association of UK on Low Income Banking.


He is a change agent who believes in providing an enabling environment for employees, allowing for leaders to emerge at all levels. He is a champion for Women and continues to provide structures that enable women to not only have a voice but equal opportunities. Notable In this regard was having Women dominated Executive Committees in Standard Bank Malawi and Stanbic Bank Zambia where he was the Chief Executive.


As Chief Executive at Stanbic Bank Zambia Limited, Charles was instrumental in the launch of Anakazi in 2017. Anakazi is the Women’s banking proposition. This solution has grown to become THE Women’s banking solution for Women in Zambia way after he has left. He also achieved several successes including taking the bank to the top most profitable bank in Zambia in 2015.


It’s been more than two year since Charles became the Stanbic Bank Kenya Chief Executive, and within this time he has instituted various initiatives. These include a bank wide training on Diversity and Inclusivity and Gender Intelligence. He has also led a cross-functional team to work on a Women’s proposition-DADA and which was successfully rolled out in the Market place.


Charles believes in family. He is a committed husband and father. He is also an avid reader and enjoys good music and art.
